The genus Horismenus Walker (Entedoninae) is one of the most commonly collected groups of eulophids in tropical America and due to the large number of species described—more than 400 – it is considered as hyperdiverse (Hansson-personal communication 2009). Several species of Horismenus are also known from temperate North America, but only three species have been recorded outside of the Americas, two from Europe, H. specularis (Erdös) (Bouček 1965) and H. puniceus Hansson (Hansson 2024, pers. observation) and one from India, H. absonus Narendran & Kumar (Narendran et. al. 2011). In Brazil 52 species of Horismenus have been recorded (UCD 2023; Pikart et al. 2015; Pikart et al. 2017; Pikart et al. 2024; Salgado-Neto et al. 2024).pt_BR
A new species of Horismenus Walker, H. saturnus Schoeninger & Hansson (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), is described from material reared from eggs of an unidentified species of Saturniidae (Lepidoptera). The new species is compared to H. cupreus (Ashmead, 1894), a species it is very similar to, and to H. ancillus (Brèthes), a species with the same type of host as H. saturnus. A total of 30 adult specimens developed from the eggs of Saturniidae. This is the second record of a Horismenus species parasitizing eggs of Saturniidae and the first record of this host from Brazil. Here, we provide a diagnosis and description of the new species including morphological and molecular characters, and multiple illustrations.pt_BR
